Wat de keuze is weet ik niet, dit is het antwoord:
Joe Hill
Born either in 1879 or 1882, you were a Swedish-American labor activist, songwriter, and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (aka, the Wobblies). You were an itinerant worker, who moved around the west, hopping freight trains and going from job to job. You coined the phrase, "pie in the sky" although most people today don't know that, and wrote many labor songs still sung today. You were wrongly executed for murdering a butcher and his son in Salt Lake City, when in fact you were spending the night with a married woman at the time--your only alibi whom you refused to identify to protect her reputation. A charming hobo, your memory lives on in at least two folks songs and a 1971 movie.
Negentiende eeuw? Maar goed, het enige dat ik hier opmerkelijk aan vond was het verhaal van het alibi dat hij niet gebruikt heeft - en dat ik niet kende, maar hoe kunnen we dit eigenlijk alsnog kennen?
Doet sterk denken aan het dramatische motief van Long black veil - een nummer dat nog merkwaardiger wordt als het gezongen wordt door een vrouw (Sally Timms, Marsha Hunt, Joan Baez....).
Maar Johnny Cash in duet met Joni Mitchell vind ik ook zeer opmerkelijk.
En Joe Hill?
Volgens mij ben ik mijn eigen negentiende-eeuwse anarchist.
